Susan Futterman "Behold the Day: The Color Block Prints of Frances Gearhart"

Frances Gearhart was a leader in the American Printmaking movement and, in particular, color block printing. Although Gearhart began as a watercolorist, she found her voice as an artist in color block printing. Embedded in the time and place of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Gearhart’s work personifies a handcrafted aesthetic and conveys a sense of directness, immediacy, and strong visual impact while depicting a clearly ideal, Californian subject matter.

Susan Futterman is co-curator of the upcoming retrospective exhibition of Frances Gearhart at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. She is also the editor of the recently published Let’s Play, from a previously, unfinished manuscript for a children’s book by Frances Gearhart and her sisters

David Gordon - The Artisans of Mata Ortiz

The potters of the Village of Mata Ortiz are in the high desert area of Chihuahua, Mexico. They are thought by many museum curators to be among the best living potters anwhere in the world today. It started with the work of Juan Quezada who recreated the Casas Grandes tradition of pottery after it had been moribund for hundreds of years. Juan and many of the village potters have produced the very finest in hand-built, hand-painted, hand-fired pottery. Though the pottery from the village is a more recent phenomena, it draws from Paquime which was excavated in the 1970's by Charles De Peso. As a young boy, Juan was inspired by the ancient shards and his discovery of the burial sites. Using the pictographs, the ancient symbols and artifacts he found roaming the environs around the village he incorporated these designs into his pottery. In turn, family members and neighbors have imitated and transformed his work. Now there is a burgeoning community of artisans learning from eachother, and building on a tradition of quality. Having had the master Jean as an example to follow, the pottery is some of the finest work being created today.

David and Tara Gordon have taken the 1600 mile roundtrip to the village over 60 times in the past 8 years. When the Gordons have traveled to the village, they have encouraged and helped many of the potters by being consistent, reliable, and appreciative of the talents of the artisans in Mata Ortiz. They are fortunate to have earned the trust and respect of the village and are able to buy some of the best pottery the villagers make.
