ARTS & CRAFTS WEEKEND

Lectures 08: 2009 Schedule Coming Soon

Sunday - 1:00 p.m.

Glenn Mason - "The Arts and Crafts Movement in the Pacific Northwest"

Glenn Mason, co-author of the recent book The Arts and Crafts Movement in the Pacific Northwest will be presenting an illustrated presentation based on his research, including some special new finds! The book, already reprinted, is the first comprehensive exploration of the Arts and Crafts legacy in the Pacific Northwest. Business, community and cultural leaders, educators, builders and contractors, architects and designers, craftspeople, artists, photographers, graphic designers and printers in Oregon and Washington enthusiastically embraced the national movement, often times incorporating northwest characteristics as part of their regional expression. Mason will address some of those regional themes in his talk.

Tim Holton - "The Place of Art: Picture Framing & the Arts and Crafts Movement"

John Ruskin said “the art of the frame-maker is a matter, I assure you, needing your very best consideration.” Tim Holton, of Holton Studio Frame-Makers explains the central relevance and significance of picture frames in the movement as well and offers guidelines for framing, informed by Arts and Crafts ideals. He'll also celebrate the circa 1910 oak frames associated with Craftsman-era pictures and furnishings.

Jane Powell - "Smart Growth, Green Building, and Other Oxymorons"

The Arts and Crafts Movement was a social and political movement as well as a design movement. Although the Arts and Crafts Revival has embraced the design concepts of the movement, we have been slower to espouse the social and political aspects. The original reformers had ideas about the built environment that are still applicable today.

In this thought-provoking (but still amusingly snarky as usual) talk, Jane Powell explodes the currently popular concepts of smart growth, density near transit, mixed use, green building, and economic growth, and explains why restoring and maintaining an existing building is the greenest thing you can do.
